Where To Find Creed Cologne Samples?

There is one name for men’s cologne that stands out above all others, and that name is Creed. This family has been producing colognes for men since the 1700’s, so after all this time it stands to reason they might just know what they’re doing. Seven generations of the Creed family have been involved in the business of making men smell fantastic, and they proudly show no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

You know you have a good thing going when you last this long, and the public know that they can count on the Creed family to keep on producing exquisite scents for men again and again, with a diverse range of scents to choose from. But can someone tell me, where can I find a creed cologne sample?

List of Creed cologne samples to look for;

Aventuscreed cologne samples aventus
Green Irish Tweed
Millesime Imperial
Silver Mountain
Santal
Vetiver
Himalya
Vetiver
Royal Water
Royal Oud
Virgin Island Water
Bois du Portugal
Erolfa

These are just to name a few of the more popular colognes made by Creed-there are many others, all of which can be found at nearly any quality department store, boutique, or online. With such an overwhelming choice of scents for men, one would be forgiven for wanting to know which scent would suit them without having to commit to buying a bottle and then finding out the cologne did not suit them. Access to some samples of these amazing colognes would be what is needed here, and there are places you can inquire about samples of the different Creed colognes to ensure you’re getting the scent that pleases you the most and suits you the best.

The Obvious Places to Look

Colognes samples can be received several different ways. A fairly large part of the time, department or boutique stores will have a stash of samples at the fragrance counter, whether it’s the men’s’ section or the ladies. The sales clerks can be a bit stingy with these, so you must know how to look like someone who if sure of what you’re after. If you don’t, they’re just going to spray one of their little cardboard tags with a scent and send you on your way. They’ll be able to tell if you’re just out collecting samples of different scents, so it wouldn’t hurt to name drop a bit when it comes to a preference and tell the salespeople specifically that you are looking for such and such a cologne by Creed, and you’d like a sample of that scent (have a couple of back up scent varieties in mind in case they are legitimately out of the one you ask for) to take home and see how well it sets up on your skin, and how well it suits you.

Any decent department store will have a stock of the tiny little samplers of the best colognes, and Creed is at the top of the heap of men’s colognes; chances are they’ll have a few different ones. For free, even. However, you may need to be prepared to work for them a little, as you’ve seen above.

The Creed Boutiques

creed cologne samples in new york

There are only two Creed Boutiques in North America. You can find them in New York City and Las Vegas. If you’re not around, no big deal because you can order from them online @ CreedBoutique.com. What is super cool about these places are that they are 100% Authentic. When you go to splurge on a $400-600 bottle of fragrance, you might not want to take any chances and make sure your bottle is legit. That’s why these places exist. If you’re not around these places, no big deal. Feel free to order online or check out an authorized retailer that will get you a few samples.

When you buy a bottle of their fragrances, the Creed boutique will throw in samples of others according to their website. So if you were planing on buying a bottle, you might as well scope a few samples from them as well.

nordstrom

Real-life experience

I personally checked out Nordstroms at the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN to see what their policy on samples for Creed were. Nordstroms is an official authorized retailer of Creed so I knew the bottles were real. (I do a bigger breakdown of my experience here for all fragrance samples if you’re curious at Nordstroms)

After purchasing a bottle of fragrance, (I wanted them to know that I was a buyer), I asked them where the Creed fragrances were and the lady almost did a backflip to show me. I would assume this was because they are all commissioned. After telling her that I was interested in Aventus because I’ve heard so much about it since it is one of the most complimented fragrances, I made sure to say, “before I purchase a bottle, I would love to wear it and grab a sample”. All the lady did was take the Aventus and spray a tester with it and hand it over to me.

I was crushed… I was hoping she would fill up one of her sample vials for me, but that just didn’t happen. I came to the conclusion that either I didn’t look like I would actually buy a bottle, or the fragrance was just so expensive they don’t allow it. The next time I head in there, I’ll straight up ask them and update this page

Other authorized retailers to take a peek at are; Neiman Marcus, Cos Bar, and a few others I’m sure. If you have any knowledge of being hooked up with a sample from these places, give me a shout so I can share it with the world.

Online experience
You may decide to reduce the amount of work you must put into getting your Creed cologne samples and just opt for getting your hands on some of those samples online, from the comfort of your home instead of jumping through hoops for some salespeople. There are several places to purchase Creed cologne samples online, at very reasonable prices and with delightfully short lead-times-and you don’t even have to talk to a salesperson.
The Perfumed Court offers a selection of samples of Creed colognes, and they happen to have a selection of these scents that cover very nearly each one of the most well known Creed fragrances. The Perfume Court is an online store that offers samples of nearly any fragrance you can imagine. They do this by “decanting” popular fragrances into sterile smaller containers to be used as samples so you can take your time and choose whatever Creed scent works best for you. You have a choice of sizes, to boot; you can choose from one through eight millilitres of fragrance, sold in sets of three at ascending prices, or you can choose a single fifteen millilitre bottle as your sample scent. This is probably your best online store to turn to for your Creed cologne samples.
Lucky Scent is another online retailer offering various samples of colognes, and they do have a selection of Creed fragrance samples as well, although it’s a bit limited. What Lucky Scent does is offer a cologne oil for you to try out, which accomplishes essentially the same thing as a cologne sample; a bit better, because you are getting an undiluted version of the scent. Lucky Scent offers the top five or six most popular Creed scents for men as samples.
MyPerfumeSamples is a giant of an online site that offers both full sized bottles of scent as well as cologne samples, and does their thing pretty much the same way The Perfumed Court does. Their selection of men’s Creed colognes is a pretty decent one, offering about ten of the most popular scents that Creed offers. With MyPerfumeSamples, you have a choice of your standard little bottle of scent in sizes ranging from one millilitre, all the way up to a 4-oz. bottle of your favorite fragrance. Your order comes to you in a single selection size, unless you are ordering multiples, slightly different from My Perfumed Court with their multipacks.
There is no need to be stuck with a cologne you’ll never wear, when you choose to go the route of getting your hands on some good samples of the fragrance that teases your imagination the most, and the one you want to try to make sure it works with your chemistry (yes, it does make a difference). When you decide to put a little effort into getting some samples of your favorite Creed cologne by trying out a few ideas outlined above, you’ll always wind up with exactly the results you want to be at your absolute best. Isn’t that what we all want?

If you have a great place to pick up an authentic sample of Creed, please share it with us so we can tell the world!

Holy Moses! The Most Expensive Cologne For Men – CologneMasters

Searching the internet you are able to find a ridiculous amount of writers claiming they know the most expensive cologne for men. On one particular site, (which I will refrain from saying which one directly) listed several fragrances over $10,000 which is simply not true. Here at CologneMasters, we have scoured everywhere online trying to find the true high end colognes to keep it authentic.

All of these colognes on this list are REAL and they can actually be purchased! Most of them, you can find by simply clicking on the link provided and it will take you to a page where you can have it if you feel like testing them out. Please let me know if you see any errors. This list will be updated frequently to maintain it’s accuracy so don’t be shy if you see something wrong! I would prefer if you messaged me on the contact page, but leaving a comment is fine too.

There is one key rule to be a part of this list. The cologne MUST still be in production. In my search of these expensive fragrances, I found some you can still purchase even though they have been discontinued. These colognes are inflated because they are hard to find, thus it is unfair we choose them as an expensive cologne for men because it is not the fair price.

Also it’s important to note, personally I have not tried all of these. So for most of them, I had to take others opinions into consideration when writing about it. If you have anything you wish to add to the description, once again, don’t be shy to leave a comment so we can discuss it. If what you say sounds educated and authentic, congratulations I will update the post with your name on it so you get some credit.

creed avenues expensive cologne for menAventus by Creed – $71.50/ounce

Aventus by Creed is one of the more popular colognes to make the most expensive list. It has a nice fruity opening that ladies seem to go crazy for. People describe this cologne as a “panty dropper” which means in cologne master terms, women seem to like it. 😉

You can find Creed Aventus for less than 300 bucks on Amazon. For this cologne, make sure you purchase it at a reputable seller for example Amazon, FragranceX or Nordstrom because of fake bottles going around allegedly. It might not be a bad idea to look at the retailers return policy when you purchase it, just in case.

Top notes get the party started with pineapple, blackcurrant, apple and bergamot. The middle notes are bursting with peppery rose, birch, jasmine and patchouli, wonderfully woody, deep and heady. At the base is oakmoss, ambergris and a light dusting of vanilla which adds the finishing touch of virile sensuality. Wear this cologne if you want to attract some attention from the ladies.

The list starts with Aventus because it is a fragrance that many people have heard of before or they have tried it themselves. Although there are many scents that are more expensive than Aventus, we are using this as sort of a benchmark for you to see how expensive some of these fragrances are because Aventus is by definition expensive, but as you’re about to see, not nearly as bad as other fragrances.

Reflection Man by Amouage – $138.23/ounce

Amouage Reflection Man most expensive cologneBeginning the list, Reflection Man is DOUBLE the price of Aventus which is already super high priced and most likely out of many people’s budget. With that being said…

Amouage fragrances are very expensive compared to the common cologne. They are made from some of the finest ingredients which make their cost per bottle go up substantially just like many other scents that are on this list.

According to basenotes.net, this cologne is close to the 50/50 on whether guys like it or not, but don’t let that influence you. The people that love this fragrance are truly, madly, deeply in love with this.

Reflection Man has a white floral accord to it. This means, if you don’t like the smell of jasmine, this fragrance is not for you. The jasmine is reported that it’s quite in your face and people often compare it to Le Male by Jean Paul Gaultier.

You can find Reflection Man on Amazon here.

Clive Christian 1872 Perfume Spray for Men – $146.98/ounce

1872 expensive cologne

Clive Christian’s 1872 Perfume spray particularly gains attention because it is a high end fragrance that would be difficult to match, and it has high end ingredients. This is a common place for almost all of Clive Christian’s fragrances because he uses incredibly expensive ingredients and most of them are natural.

If you’re someone that wears fragrance pretty casually and lacks a certain appreciation for natural ingredients, spending money on this scent may seem like a waste of money since there are many cheaper alternatives that smell similar. Women have said their counterparts that have worn this fragrance smell sophisticated and mature which is something that not everyone is going for.

The people that continue to wear 1872 by Clive Christian are those that are brought comfort by wearing it for so long already. Others have said they do receive compliments from it, but nothing overwhelming.

From the first spray, wearers claim they are sent on a journey of citrus, green, and spice notes.

Checking out a few more sites, over at Parfumo.net, this fragrance receive an 8/10 rating from it’s reviewers.

Clive Christian rocks the charts as far as most expensive colognes mostly because of it’s origin. For $244.86, you can find a 1.7 ounce bottle on Amazon. Of all the Clive Christian colognes, this one is particularly a favorite.

If you are a citrus and fresh scent lover, you will undoubtedly notices the lime and grapefruit. Picture the fragrance Acqua Di Gio and place a little spice in there. Add a little longevity and there you have Clive Christian’s 1872 Perfume Spray for men.

Tom Ford Private Blend Tobacco Vanille – $152.93/ounce

tobacco-vanille

Tom Ford’s Private Blend Tobacco Vanille is a fragrance that receives rave reviews. From people talking about the oodles of compliments they receive from it, all the way to how it’s blended perfectly together to create a timeless smell.

Like any fragrance however, it does have the people that criticize it. For some people it doesn’t mesh well with their skin, it’s too sweet, or the price tag does not live up to the hype.

The people who love this fragrance speak about how it’s perfect for the winter. The tobacco, vanilla blend makes the cold a little more bearable. Also, people rant and rave how it smells like sophistication and is just plain lovely.

This is one of Tom Ford’s most popular colognes, so don’t be shy to try it out. Anything Tom Ford currently is like the Porsche of men’s cologne. Don’t be afraid to pick this bottle up for around $260 on Amazon.

Straight To Heaven by Kilian – $152.94/ounce

kilian expensive perfume

Straight To Heaven by Killian is one of the highest rated fragrances on The Most Expensive Cologne For Men List. Most people will tell you it smells like rum when they first spray it on, and its very easy to like and difficult to hate.

The Straight To Heaven starts with a shot of dark rum and evolves into the scent of a rum drenched, toasted oak staves according to one user on Fragrantica. It continues to smell very masculine and you will continue to receive compliments even though your own nose says its gone.

A very well supported cologne from its users with mostly good ratings. The cologne is described as a woody, spicy scent and was launched not too long ago in 2007. Straight to Heaven is also one of the more popular colognes for how expensive it is. You will receive attention by wearing this cologne. You will also receive compliments. Another one for sure to try if you’re ready to give one of these expensive colognes a try.

The only consistent complaint I’ve seen thus far has been the longevity. The worst I’ve seen reported is 3-4 hours, but others have said to get as much as 6 hours out of it. It most likely has something to do with your skin. If you need some tips on making your fragrance last longer, click here!

This cologne comes in a 50 ml bottle for $260 which you can find on Amazon. For those Cologne Masters that don’t like math, a 50 ml bottle is equivalent to a 1.7 ounce bottle.

Tom Ford Private Blend Oud Wood – $162.81/ounce

oud wood most expensive perfume

This cologne is designed for a true cologne connoisseur. Oud Wood opens with an earthy mantle of richly woven saffron, black rose and black truffle, with hints of floralcy. The middle notes consist of, vanilla, patchouli, oud wood and tree moss soften the intensity, making the scent a sensual experience.

Oud Wood is described as one of the most tame and unimposing fragrances which Tom Ford puts his name on. It’s a fragrance that demands quality, but not attention.

The longevity and projection is not a powerhouse like it’s siblings Tuscan Leather and Tobacco Vanille.

In summary, of all the fragrances on this list, Oud Wood is one of the safest, inoffensive, fragrances you can wear, while simultaneously smell sophisticated like like a CEO of a company or a Hollywood megastar.

You can find a bottle of this treasure on Amazon for about $300.

Pardon by Nasomatto (2011) – $164.95/ounce

pardon-nasomatto

Pardon by Nasomatto might be one of the highest rated fragrances on the Most Expensive Cologne For Men list.

Created by Alessandro Guiltieri, Pardon rocks a scent of Agarwood, Sandalwood, and Dark Chocolate as the defining notes that make up this smell.

For a fragrance that comes in such a small quantity (1 ounce), this scent has a potent and blinding force behind it. You don’t have to worry about projection with a fragrance like this one.

The people that love this fragrance speak about how rich, spicy, and masculine this fragrance is and it makes it perfect for a winter blend. Men talk about the compliments they receive from their girlfriends from it and it seems like the ladies like to steal it away for a night when you’re not watching so beware of that.

The people that put Pardon on blast are those that typically just don’t like the ingredients or don’t like niche perfumes in general. If you’re a main stream guy, you may not understand this one, but it’s still worth snagging a sample if you get your hands on one.

If you are looking for a bottle, check Amazon here.

Tom Ford Private Blend Azure Lime – $172.34/ounce

azure lime most expensive mens cologne

Tom Ford’s Azure Lime gives a fresh, unexpected spin to timeless essences. Vibrant citrus notes, sophisticated florals, warm woods and sensual musk evoke the easy elegance and relaxed style of the paradisiacal island of Mustique.

The opening of Azure Lime is what captures peoples interest. It smells of freshly squeezed limes almost directly out of your hands with a hint of breeze from the sea. The problem people complain about is the longevity. Allegedly it only lasts for about an hour which doesn’t make sense for spending over $200 a bottle for.

If you’re a random dude on the street trying Azure Lime, more often than not, you will either dislike the scent completely or be neutral about it. The people that appreciate Azure Lime are fragrance connoisseurs that have judge a fragrance on it’s artistic value rather than it’s value wearing.

When you take a whiff of this cologne, make sure you look for accords of fresh, wood, and citrus which are a few of my personal favorites. Users describe it as one of the best lime scents that they have ever smelled.

You can find a 1.7 ounce bottle around $300 on Amazon.

#3 – Clive Christian “C” for Men – $187.49/ounce

clive c expensive mens cologne

Clive Christian’s “C” for men gets a lot of comparisons to Tuscan Leather according to many of the reviewers over @ Fragrantica. It seems like people are in a fist fight on whether this fragrance is one of the best leather scents in the world. After reading through the reviews, there is no question that its certainly a top 3.

This particular Clive Christian Cologne you can find for about $299.99 a bottle at Amazon.

At the end of the day, this particular cologne has received RAVING reviews from it’s users which makes it one of the best all-around colognes on the list. The cologne seems to last all day long and has a great scent. Whenever you have a fragrance that is this expensive, you’re always going to get comparisons on whether or not it lives up to the hype.

Despite being heavily debated, at the end of the day, Christian “C” is still well liked.

The accords that you’ll be searching for with “C” for men are, oud (pretty heavily), balsamic, and aromatic. Besides being able to notice oud, you’ll also notice background notes of tonka beans and various florals.

#3 – Black Afgano by Nasomatto – $190/ounce

most expensive men black afgano

Black Afgano is considered a “shared fragrance” meaning it’s ok for guys and gals to wear it. One of the best reviews I’ve read happened to be over at ScentTrunk.com where they go on to say just how potent and strong this fragrance can be.

What makes this fragrance truly unique is that it was made to smell like “hashish” which comes from a cannabis plant. This makes Black Afgano even more interesting and yet controversial. People also describe it as a dark scent which would be something that Darth Vader would wear out to the club.

This scent is described as linear meaning that it smells the same 6 hours later as when you first put it on. The smell is very strong so an ounce will go along ways. People have even said that if you spray it on your clothes, you will be able to continue smelling it for months!

The notes you undoubtedly will find in Black Afgano is woodsy, incense, oud, tobacco.

You can buy an ounce of this cologne for $190 bucks on Amazon.

X for Men by Clive Christian – $191.18/ounce

x for men

Clive Christian’s “X factor” is a modern fragrance with a commanding, royal character of orris, cardamom, and cinnamon. This cologne is described as a spicy, woody fragrance that is available in 1.7 and 3.4 ounces.

Since I haven’t tried this fragrance myself, I had a great time reading about all the people that have and their thoughts perhaps more than any other scent thus far.

Comparisons to the “Dos Equis man” was simply amazing. When you think about the most interesting man in the world, allegedly this is the fragrance that he’s wearing. Men that wish to smell sophisticated and perhaps have a fine appreciation for the arts of fragrance are giving X for men a perfect 10/10.

A perfect score from these types of perfume reviewers is something to really appreciate. Fragrance as a product gets some of the harshest reviews when it comes to critics that makes me wonder how perfume designers continue to wake up in the morning and continue doing their work. For me to see such high ratings from one after another is simply amazing and makes me want to pony up and buy a bottle for myself and see what the fuss is about.

The least expensive place I found to purchase it was at Amazon at about $325 for a 1.7 oz bottle. I did see smaller bottles for about an ounce for $220, but it made me question the legitimacy of it since rarely do you see a bottle of that size.

I’m super curious to hear opinions from “casual fragrance wearers”, (the guys that just want to smell good to pick up chicks) to see what their perspective on it is.

The men that wear this fragrance regularly describe it as a scent made for kings. Immediately just staring at the bottle you can see why. With a crown top, it looks like it deserves a spot on the throne. If you want to smell like royalty, this is it.

#1 – Clive Christian No. 1 Perfume Spray for Men – $496.20/ounce

most expensive cologne for men clive no 1

Clive Christian’s “No. 1” can be found at about $865 at several different places for 1.6 ounces and $796 on Amazon. This fragrance is recognized as the world’s most expensive cologne for men and was formulated from extremely rare and fine ingredients.

You can immediately tell this cologne was made for only the most elite of users based on the design of the bottle. It’s the type you would want to keep in plain sight in your bathroom, living room, bedroom, or whatever just because it looks like a piece of jewelry that needs to be shown off.

People whom have worn this cologne describe it as having many different floral scents all at once. If anyone has tried this fragrance, I’d love to hear your comments by dropping it down below!

Wondering Where to Buy Men’s Cologne?

What is one the one thing in your grooming ritual you could never do without? That one thing that, if you didn’t do, or wear, you’d feel naked leaving the house without? There is one thing I put on as the last part of my ritual before I leave my house. It’s the one thing I don’t feel complete without. Its my cologne and every man needs to be sure on where to buy cologne.

Stop laughing, its true. We’re just like the ladies, we love to smell good. There is nothing wrong with walking by someone and seeing the look on their face when they get a whiff of you (as long as you don’t smell like three-day-old dead goat).

Something for men has been really trending over the past few years, and its gaining strength and ground and showing no signs of stopping. Its “beauty” products for men. Creams, lotions, moisturizers, special shampoos, conditioners, soaps, deodorants, makeup, the list goes on and on. Personally, I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing (apparently women don’t want to date someone who’s prettier than they are, so I’m not even sure who or what started the trend).

where to buy cologne man picture

The one item that has been an integral part of man grooming and has been around forever is cologne. From the old standards like Aqua Velva, Old Spice, Hai Karate (I can’t believe I remember that one) and Brut to Dolce and Gabbana Pour Homme, Armani Aqua Di Gio, or the old standby Calvin Klein’s Obsession for Men, the market is flooded with great colognes to make you smell spectacular.

While its never an issue to find stores that stock a wide selection of great colognes, maybe you’re looking for the best prices, the best online stores, or the best service in your local department store or boutique. Maybe you happen to be looking for that vintage or hard to find cologne. Here are some places to check out to find the exact scent you’re looking for.

Where To Buy Cologne Online

Online stores are one of the best for where to buy cologne, because you don’t have to stand in line and wait to be looked after, you don’t have a far too accommodating salesperson trying to spritz you with everything in their arsenal, and mostly, because you can check out scent after scent online while you keep one eye on that season opener hockey game or the finals for the World Series. Maybe you just prefer shopping in your socks and underwear without getting arrested. Either way, online shopping, even for something as personal as cologne can be a great experience.

fragrancenet
FragranceNet.com is a great place to start looking. They stock over 2500 varieties of cologne just for men alone. They offer your favorites at well discounted prices, ranging from twenty percent to sixty percent off of your typical real live retail prices. If you are interested in subscribing to their site, you can even get coupons (so you can keep more of your hard earned cash for the hot date you’re buying cologne for in the first place).

They have a great selection of the hip, hot, and trendy, as well as some of the old classics. While I can’t promise that you’ll ever find Hai Karate on their site, you will find a lot of the great colognes you may have thought have fallen by the wayside or are simply no longer in production anymore. If they don’t stock it on their site, chances are it’s really just not around, but you’ll have plenty of options to pick a brand new favorite from.

amazon
Amazon.com has a pretty terrific selection of Men’s fragrances. Here you can find many of the popular colognes, and some you have probably never even heard of. I managed to find one inspired by Halloween. The prices range pretty close to your basic boutique or department store prices, but there are deals to be had. As long as you are purchasing from a reputable vendor, turnaround time on the orders is fast and efficient. If its just the convenience of the whole online shopping experience that grabs your attention, Amazon is a good bet.

Before you head on your way to Amazon, there is a ridiculous amount of fragrances to choose from. Let us help you out! Check out our posts like, “The very best cologne for men“, and “The best cologne for young men professionals“, to give you a good idea of what you should be looking for.

THE BEST OF THE BEST

EBay is another good site worth having a look at for your colognes, and often you can get both the hard to find and more current or well known colognes for a decent price. Some of the individuals online for E Bay offer free shipping as well. Returns are likely going to depend on the particular criteria of the seller, but usually they’re pretty open to accepting a return on a defective product, or if the item does not meet a purchaser’s expectations.

As always when with dealing with a reseller site like this, you do need to make sure you’re purchasing from a reputable vendor. Make sure you check out the reviews of the person you choose to purchase from before you lay down any of your cash.

Those are the top three online stores to consider if you’re not wanting to have to waste a lot of time in a crowded store looking for a new cologne or trying to find something new to try without spending an entire day at a fragrance counter. There are other online stores to have a look at as well. As with anything online, your experience may vary from site to site. Make sure you try to check out reviews first.

BOUTIQUE/SPECIALTY STORE SHOPPING
If the idea of spending some time pacing a potentially crowded mall or smaller store doesn’t faze you, there are some great stores out there that carry exclusively or almost exclusively colognes or scents. I don’t know of any boutique stores that cater to just men’s fragrances (probably just not enough of a market demand) but there are a lot of Unisex stores that should have a little something for you.

Chances are they’re not going to have the selection at your fingertips that online shopping would have, but the upside is that you get to immediately check out your selections to see what you like. Some may even offer you the opportunity to special order certain fragrances. You may only find some of these specialty stores in certain regions, but many if not all of them offer an online shopping option as well.

The_Body_Shop_logoThe Body Shop
This store is known practically all over the world, and is very popular with both men and women. While they don’t carry your usual run of the mill popular fragrances, they do have some very pretty interesting product. The majority of their fragrances are scents that are naturally based; lime, lemon, spices, citrus and woodsy, grassy scents. Prices range to the mid price point, so you’ll be spending around the same as a typical middle of the road cologne scent at other retailers.

If you want to find something that takes a more natural approach to scents and men’s body care products, this is a fantastic store. Staff are knowledgeable about their products. They do offer an online shopping option.

Sephora
Anytime you hear this name, you can’t be blamed for thinking immediately of makeup, toiletries, and skin care for women. However, they also carry a very good line of men’s fragrances. These are huge stores and almost always packed with people, so be prepared to be in a high energy, busy, fast paced store. Sephora may tend to stock the newer and hipper colognes, so this is not a place for where to buy cologne for Dad that you want to try on yourself.

Staff is upbeat, energetic, and very knowledgeable about everything they stock. Price points for men’s fragrances are going to run from the mid to the high end of the scale, and you may be able to find some colognes here that you won’t find anywhere else, even online. Bonus points here for also having a huge variety of other products just for men that may have you going back again and again. Sephora also offers an online shopping experience if you feel like you can’t handle the crowds.

Shopping Mall Kiosks (various names)

These small, often nondescript stores found in shopping malls all over the world can be your biggest nightmare or a dream come true. More often than not, they are privately run or at the very least part of a franchise. Much like online shopping, check out the reviews on the shop you pick before you lay down your cash.

Consumers are very honest and will have left their mark if a store is selling sub par product. Most of the time, the products are bona fide designer fragrances and hard to find or exclusive items at reduced prices. Just be aware that many of them also carry a “Final Sale” warning, so once your money is gone, its gone and you may be stuck with a very good knock off. Do your homework first.

DEPARTMENT STORE/DRUGSTORE SHOPPING
Heading to a larger or box style store is a good option if you want to check out what your scent is going to be like on you firsthand as well. Typically, they are not as crowded or busy as the specialty stores will be (just don’t choose to go fragrance shopping on a Saturday morning at some of them). Don’t decide ahead of time that you won’t find what you are looking for here. Many of these stores have great men’s fragrances.

Wal-Mart
Yes, I will mention Wal-Mart here. While it may be the last place you’d think of for where to buy cologne, the stores usually have a pretty extensive health and beauty section, and that includes a selection of men’s scents. You can find pretty much anything you’re looking for here (and this is one place you may just find that old stand-by of Dad’s that you always loved and want for yourself). They do carry the newest fragrances as well, but these tend to go pretty fast. The price point is typically anywhere from bang on the competitor’s prices to almost half price from what you would find elsewhere.

Shoppers Drug Mart (Canada)
This drugstore chain has come a long way since its inception. They now have an entire section of their stores dedicated totally to beauty aides, and this includes a great selection of men’s colognes. You’ll find almost everything here (much like Wal-Mart but without the potential entertainment/shock value) that you could possibly want when you are shopping for a new scent.

The price point here will range from fantastic sale prices to your average expected price for the newest designer fragrances. They also offer a coffret selection; this is a boxed set of the most popular fragrance samples at a decent price. Why samples? So you can choose from a variety of fragrances before you hand over your cash. The sets also come with a coupon for one bottle out of the set that you like the most. There is no further cost to you once you pick out your favorite cologne.

Just walk in with your coupon once you’ve chosen which one you like, and go home with your new full sized bottle of that scent. It’s a win-win.

Walgreens (USA)

Walgreens_store
Another great drugstore that can be found on practically every other block in almost any city. This store boasts a selection of men’s fragrance that you will find in the other higher end stores. Designers fragrances stand beside the favorites of high school stand-bys. Again, you can find extreme bargains here on a weekly basis.

The typical price point of these fragrances is going to be your standard retail expectations, so expect mid to high price point. The great thing about these stores is the quick in and out you can manage, so if you’re running out to get your favorite cologne you just ran out of before the big date it’s a quick stop.

There are many other department stores and drugstores that carry name brand fragrances all over the continent, and some of the locals (or very similar namesakes or forerunners) have even made their way to other countries.
-Boots Drugstores
-Macy’s Department Store
-Holt Renfrew
-Hudson Bay Company
-London Drugs
-Nordstrom’s
-Target
-Kohl’s
-Neiman-Marcus

The bottom line is that you can find your favorite cologne almost anywhere. You can shop in your underwear from the comfort of your couch, or you can arm yourself with your old high school football shoulder pads and brave the crowds on the weekends. You can hit your local drugstore, and you’ll probably even be able to charm a few samples out of them while you’re there so you can make a decision between a few and come back to make a purchase later.

Shopping is a lot less painful than it used to be. I wouldn’t call it fun, but it’s pretty painless and it doesn’t have to be a challenge to go and pick up a bottle of that scent that it going to turn everyone’s head. Minus the goat. Let me know if you find any Hai Karate anywhere. I miss that stuff.

Pokemon Go Fragrance? Are you kidding me?

If you’ve been living under a rock for the last few weeks and have no idea what Pokemon go is, it’s time you get with the game.

Pokémon Go has already surpassed 30 million downloads and 35 million in revenue according to Sensor Tower and expect it to continue to rise over the next few months.

What the heck is Pokémon Go?

Well, if you look around the web, you’re going to find all kinds of crazy explanations of what this game is. A pretty good overview can be found over at Lifehacker.

As most people have heard the saying, “Gotta catch em all”, Pokémon involves an adventure of finding creatures in the real world by using your mobile device. No this does not mean Pikachu will show up in your living room in person.

It does mean that you use your mobile device such as a cell-phone or tablet, to find Pokémon with them and once you do, you will need to capture them using a Pokéball.

Some of these Pokémon are more rare than others, so if you find one, it can get a little out of control as you can see by watching the video.

Even though you can play the game like you’re running around the world collecting Pokémon, that doesn’t have to be the only thing you do during the game. At popular destinations and landmarks, you can also find places called “gyms”. At these locations are where you are able to battle other teams for control over the gym.

My background of the game is a little more aggressive than I care to admit. It involves driving around with some of the coolest people in the land such as BravePepper, Nibbles, MaylaBayla, KingJenks, Millos, CharlieHustle, TurdMonster3, and PraytoMyBallz. If you’re unfortunate enough to be on a different team like EmmyJoy, prepare to get some smack talk. Sorry if the names offend you but this game is intense.

The actual purpose of the game in my opinion is not to find all the Pokémon on the planet, or take over the most gyms. After spending countless nights playing the game with other trainers, I have concluded the game is more about spending time with your friends and meeting new people.

In this day and age where we spend almost our entire lives online socializing, Pokémon Go forces you to get out in the world to discover new places you might have never seen before and perhaps meet some new friends along the way. This is why I think the game will continue to be popular.

There is really no winning or losing in Pokémon which makes it fun for anyone of all ages. If you’re taking a walk through the park, and pull up your smartphone, you might be surprised at what creatures you might be able to find, catch, and perhaps turn into candy!

A Pokémon fragrance? Really?

You bet there is! It’s only a matter of time before we start seeing Pokémon everything. I can imagine this Christmas we are going to see all kinds of creative toys like we saw with Star Wars in 2015.

Currently you don’t have to look very far to get them. Amazon has them listed but they are usually very low stock.

What does it smell like?

Although I haven’t personally smelled it yet, people are saying the strongest note you get from it is Orange Blossom.

Surprisingly, the reviews over at Fragrantica, are pretty high! If anyone ends up giving this fragrance a shot, I would love to hear what you think!

If you still need some help finding some of the best cologne for men, don’t be afraid to check out or hugely popular post!

How To Get Free Cologne Samples, Or Ridiculously Inexpensive For Men

When it comes to men’s cologne and fragrances, most dudes are overwhelmed by how many choices there are. Wouldn’t it be nice to have access to free cologne samples?

For the last few years, each time I wanted to try a new fragrance, I just bit the bullet and purchased the bottle. Today I have a shelf of ridiculous amounts of fragrance that would be impossible to wear over the next few decades and my wallet is several hundred dollars lighter because of it.

If I had any common sense, I would have just taken the time and researched all the ways I could find some free samples so I could have saved a few bucks, or prevented the embarrassment of purchasing fragrances that I’ll never wear again.

Easiest Ways To Get Free Cologne Samples

1. Find The Retailers That Offer Free Samples

The easiest way to find free fragrance samples, is to find the department stores that offer them for free! Sounds easy right? Well… maybe not… You may find yourself wandering around the mall begging for samples with little or no success.

Luckily, we have found a few stores that will shell them out at no charge!

nordstrom

AND

sephora

Both of these places have wonderful reputations on walking out with a few free samples.

But, how many samples will they allow you to take home?

Outstanding question! This usually depends on a few different things. If you are buying a few bottles of cologne, and you ask them nicely, they will most likely give you as many samples as your pockets can hold.

If you’re walking up randomly and ask for a sample, they are more than likely going to only give you a few.

At the end of the day, the person behind the counter is going to decide how many samples you get to take with you. Try to be kind and courteous because ultimately these people hold the key to those free cologne samples you’re looking for!

Looking for a Sephora or Nordstrom near you? Well, we have you covered.

Nordstrom nearest you – Just enter your zip code.

Sephora nearest you – Just pop in your zip code.

2. Take Your Own Vials With You

Not everyone has a Norstrom or Sephora next to them. Personally I’m about 60 miles away from a Sephora and about 2.5 hours away from a Nordstrom. If I want to sample a new fragrance, it is not realistic for me to drive an absurd amount just to find a retail store that will give out free samples.

This is where heading into a local retailer like Target, Wal-mart, JC Penny’s, Herbergers, or whatever makes a little more sense. These retailers typically won’t hand out a freebie sample for you to take home. If they are promoting a new product, perhaps they will have them readily available, but there is no guarantee that you will be able to snag one.

The best thing to do in this situation is to purchase your own vials or decanting kits to bring home your own.

The most common retailers will have have bottles of fragrance just sitting out that anyone walking by can pick up and spray a few squirts and then stick it back in their pocket.

The picture shown above are vials that you can spray perfume, cologne, or other things in that come from a bottle to take home as a sample. You can get a package of 100 of these things off Amazon for under $15!

*Pro Tip – Some of these places will have coffee beans sitting out on the counter. These are not meant to make your head explode on why they are there, but they are meant to sniff between smelling fragrances so your nose doesn’t get all confused on what the actual fragrance smells like.

coffee beans cologne

If you go somewhere fancy and you actually start to like the guy  behind the counter, make sure you get his/her business card or give them a tip, because they usually make commission and it would probably mean a lot to them if you purchased from them, even if it means paying a few more bucks. After all, you usually are taking time away from the employee where he/she could be working with other customers.

So in conclusion, if you buy a pack of 100 vials for $15, you’re looking at about 15 cents per fragrance sample! Not so bad!

Are you wondering which fragrances to get samples of? Well, check out our infamous post on the best cologne for men and start there!

3. Where To Get Free Cologne Samples Online

When browsing the web looking for free cologne samples, good luck! There are tons of places that promise if you fill out a form, click on this link, you will have a perfume sample. These places are mostly scams looking for some advertising dollars and I noticed when I did fill something out, it just took me to the manufacturers page that I could of found on my own.

Lesson #1 – It’s difficult

The saying, there is no such thing as a free lunch, is 100% accurate.

If you’ve found some places that are 100% legit and recommend we add it to our list, PLEASE LET ME KNOW so I can get it added to the list.

Here are a few that I found…

PrettyThrifty.com – Mostly random stuff but currently the best I’ve found

LatestFreeStuff.co.uk – Based out of the UK

Lesson #2 – You might have to buy something with it

If you want to get a sample of something, your best bet is the next time you order your favorite potion from FragranceX, Perfumania, or one of the other big time online retailers, ask them if they can provide you with a few samples.

Here are some places that will add samples to your order with no issues;

The Fragrance Shop – UK

Lesson #3 – Go to the manufacturers website and get your beg on…

If you’re ready to start pulling out the big guns and really start to hunt for free samples online, you might want to check out all the major manufacturers to see if they will send you one directly.

This is extremely expensive for them to do, so don’t be surprised if you have to sign up for their newsletter to do it. After all, they need to get something out of it too.

4. Are you ok paying a few bucks?

Find some online retailers –

Heading to the store and filling up vials is a long and cumbersome process. Maybe it’s not such a bad idea to just pay a few bucks and get samples sent directly to your house.

After all, it takes gas to travel to the department store. It also takes time out of your precious day which most likely has some value. Would you pay $5 so you wouldn’t have to sit in traffic, drive to the mall, get out in possibly cold and rainy weather to get a sample of fragrance?

The answer to that question is pretty simple for me… heck no…

Most places online that sell perfume samples, do it at a reasonable cost. When I say reasonable, I’m talking about less than 10 bucks per vial and for most fragrances right around 5 dollars. You simply just can’t go wrong there.

Sites That I Use

MyPerfumeSamples – These guys are great! They even have a clearance section where you can find samples for less than a dollar.

FragranceX – I buy a lot of of my stuff here and it’s super convenient they also sell samples.

Amazon.com – Where I buy most of my fragrance

CreedBoutique.com – If I’m going after Creed cologne samples. I also wrote a post exclusively for Creed here.

Ready For Some Tips For Trying On Samples?

Method 1 – Using paper strips

perfume strips

These paper strips are readily available at most department stores, but also can be purchased at Amazon.com for under $10.

The GOOD

What’s awesome about this method is the amount of fragrances you smell in a short amount of time.

The BAD

When smelling off a test strip, you’re only getting the top notes of the fragrance. Unfortunately many scents are complex and need to several minutes to hours to develop. Using strips, you may overlook a fragrance because the top notes are not to your desire.

*Pro Tip – If you want to track how well the fragrance progresses over time, write on the strip the time you smelled the fragrance and come back to it in a few hours.

Here are some tips for using these bad boys;

  1. Write the name of what you’re smelling on the strip so you don’t forget!
  2. Don’t soak the strip with fragrance, it only needs a small amount
  3. Don’t let the part that has the perfume oils on it, touch other surfaces or smelly objects
  4. Wait a few seconds for the initial top notes that stink with alcohol dissipate. This will most likely skew your sense of smell.
  5. For the love of goodness, don’t huff the strip… There is no need to take deep inhalations to figure out what a fragrance smells like
  6. Don’t smell too many different strips consecutively… Your nose can only hand about 3… Have some coffee beans nearby if you can to neutralize your nose

Method 2 – Apply fragrance directly on your skin

I know this method seems simple and juvenile, but it really is the best way to get a taste for what a fragrance really smells like. Everyone has different skin, so therefore the fragrance oils can smell different to other people!

The GOOD

This method is the best to sample fragrances. You get to smell what the fragrance actually smells like. If you’re trying to decide between a few different cologne samples, use this technique and spray a bit on your wrist and the other fragrance on your other one.

The BAD

You only get 2 shots at a sample this way. (unless you convince the people you’re with to loan you their wrists)

Questions/Comments?

And that about does it for how to get free cologne samples! If you have any questions or suggestions, please leave me a comment below and I would love to chat with you about it or add it to the post. Don’t worry, I’ll give you credit!

There is a topic that I may have missed for some, but I wanted to write a separate post about it. The topic is “perfume swapping” which involves trading bottles with someone. Since this doesn’t have to do with samples, I wanted to give it a full post to see what happens.

Top 20 Most Amazing and Ridiculously Cool Cologne and Perfume Bottles

Well hello again, and welcome to yet another fabulous, amazing article on the infamous CologneMasters’s blog. My name is Jason and I’m the first ever self-proclaimed CologneMaster guiding you on this epic adventure on cool cologne bottles that look ridiculously fantastic.

A few of these fragrances I do own, and I love it when someone comes over and picks it up because their curiosity of what’s inside is too much for them. I’ve had on a few occasions had people look at one of my bottles (not telling which one so I don’t spoil the surprise later) and half heartedly look like they are about to steal it because it looks so cool.

Since I don’t own all of these fragrances bottles, I may have missed a few that should be on the list. If I did, please drop a comment below so I can get it added. There are so many cool cologne bottles out there that making this list was next to impossible, but like I said, if I missed your favorite, hit me up so I can get it added.

Cologne 101 – A Guide On How To Start Choosing and Wearing Fragrances

With this guide, you’re going to learn;

  • Why wearing cologne is important
  • What’s the difference between fragrance/cologne/perfume?
  • Basics of fragrance
  • Linear vs Non-Linear
  • What notes are
  • The differences between cologne, fragrance, and perfume
  • Tips to get you started

Why wear cologne?

Why wear cologne?

Fragrance for me started back in high-school. I can remember my group of friends spraying Acqua Di Gio before heading to school or going out for the evening. It seemed girls couldn’t keep their hands off them and guys wanted to be like them. After awhile of noticing the effects of something simple like wearing cologne, I knew I had to get my very first bottle to see if I could gain the same results they did.

My first experience choosing a cologne was rather interesting. When I headed into the local department store, there were at least 20-50 different fragrances I could choose and I had no idea how to narrow down my choices. The kid next to me was busy squirting every single cologne they had out for display and stunk so bad that I immediately became nervous and was anxious to leave. I saw a bottle of Acqua Di Gio just waiting to be plucked from the rack. Since it’s the only cologne I have ever known, I quickly picked it up and ran out of there as fast as I could.

After wearing my new cologne to school, sports, and out with friends, I immediately noticed the results. The girls I talked to sometimes would compliment me on how I smelled and I would catch them leaning in closer to talk to me. The guys I hung out with looked gave me more respect, and lastly I had more confidence with everything I did. I was less shy, timid, and just all-around felt more comfortable talking and being close to other people.

I loved cologne! It made chicks want me, guys want to be me, and it gave me more confidence! But was this really true?

After wearing different colognes for over 15 years, I know that no single bottle of cologne can actually pull these statements off. A cologne can’t make someone that doesn’t want to be attractive suddenly transform into a womanizing machine. The cool kids in school don’t want to hang out with you just because you’re wearing cologne.

What fragrance actually does is give you a “presence”. Imagine shaking these guys’ hands.

Both of them give you some sort of perception of who they are and how tough, rugged, soft, sophisticated, and intelligent they are just by looking at their picture.

Now imagine these dudes with the following smells and how it changes how you view them…

image

Imagine them smelling like they just finished cutting wood… sawdust, woody aromas, earthy smell

Imagine them smelling they just got back from a campfire… smokey, outdoorsy

Imagine them smelling like they just hopped out of the shower… like soap, cleanliness

Imagine them smelling like pure sexiness… like they were headed on a hot date

You can see how simple smells can change how you view someone. This is their “presence”! It can make someone that looks manly appear 1) even more manly and bad ass 2) like an overgrown teddy bear or 3) like a sex machine ready to prowl. If you look at someone that looks a little more proper and business professional and you change the way they smell, 1) they can also be perceived as more manly, 2) more soft and laid back, or 3) like the sexiest man on the planet.

You can now see the purpose of fragrance and why you need to be wearing it. Using a scent can make you appear cleaner, manlier, sophisticated, sexy, or just simply fresher than you actually look. It magnifies and amplifies how you already feel creating an “aura” around you that gives you confidence and something that people want to be around. The fragrance by itself doesn’t attract women or breed confidence. Wearing it will give you more “presence” to create an environment where you appear to be more sexy, confident, sophisticated, or whatever you may be looking for.

According to a Men’s Health Article published in 2009, “smelling is the most intimate sense”. When we smell someone we consume them. Don’t believe me? What happens when you try and eat when your nose is plugged? You can forget about tasting anything because your taste buds rely on sense of smell. Understanding this philosophy, smelling like a Greek god can help you be perceived as one.

What’s the difference between cologne/fragrance/perfume? Isn’t it all the same thing?

If there is one thing I’ve learned from talking to fellow Cologne Masters and experts, it’s that they take fragrance talk, terms, and definition very seriously. So for the record, let’s get this right.

If you walk up to one of your buddies and they smell like Greek god with their cologne, you might say something like “Holy Moses, your cologne smells amazing!”. Most people will accept your compliment and go on with their life.

If you’re talking with a Cologne Master, fragrance expert, perfume-head, or someone else with considerable fragrance knowledge, they might correct you and say that it is not “cologne” and it’s actually an “eau de toilette” or “eau de parfum”.

Keep in mind, this should rarely happen, but it’s important to know that the word cologne is actually means just in case you end up talking to a fragrance professional about it.

General word = fragrance

If you wish to be safe when talking about a scent you like and you don’t want to sound like an idiot, call everything a fragrance.

In each fragrance, there is a certain amount of aromatic compounds. A fragrance can usually be between 1-30% of this composition and the rest of it is either water or alcohol. This concentration of aromatic compounds makes up the oil.

If a fragrance has a lower concentration of oil compared to alcohol, this mixture is called an eau, which means water.

Pure Perfume

  • Difficult to find
  • Very expensive
  • 15-30% oil
  • 6+ hours of longevity

Eau de Parfum (EDP)

  • 8-15% perfume oil
  • Mostly women’s fragrance
  • Lasts 4-6 hours

Eau de Toillette (EDT)

  • 4-10% perfume oil
  • Highest concentration for men
  • Lasts up to 4 hours

Eau de Cologne (EDC)

  • 2-5% perfume oil
  • Lasts around 3 hours

Eau de Fraiche (EDF)

  • 1-3% perfume oil
  • Lasts less than 3 hours

*Note – After wearing cologne for so long now, one thing to take with a grain of salt is how long these fragrances actually last. I have worn several Eau de Fraiches that lasts more than 3 hours. The times on these fragrance are more of a guideline than a rule.

**Note – Throughout the site, you’ll see many articles on cologne. Keep in mind in the world of fragrance, cologne is used very loose. People describe perfume, Eau de Fraiches, Eau de parfums, and Eau de toillettes as cologne! Just keep that in mind when you see different fragrances. Look for the abbreviations of EDC, EDT, EDP, and EDF next to all of these colognes if you’re one of those guys that needs to know what type of fragrance a particular scent is.

The Basics

To begin, you must understand one essential fact about your skin. Believe it or not, your skin is different than the person next to you. Your skin might be more dry, oily, sweaty, clammy, or hairy compared to friends, lovers, and family members. Because of this fact, fragrances you use may smell different on you than someone else! A bottle of cologne will contain various extracts, oils, alcohol, preservatives and water. This combination of skin and cologne creates a mini chemistry experiment. If you’re someone that has difficulty with cologne wearing off throughout the day, I highly suggest you check out ways to keep you smelling good all day.

Linear Vs Non-Linear Fragrances

Before reading anything further that I’m about to write, I bet you can guess what the difference between a linear or non-linear fragrance is.

A linear fragrance smells the same from the moment the scent hits your skin until the last drop evaporates into the atmosphere.

A non-linear fragrance is a complex array of different ingredients that are blended together to put the person who is wearing it on a fantastic voyage of different smells throughout the day.

There are pros and cons to both linear and non-linear fragrances so it’s up to you to decide which one is right for you.

For example, if you’re heading to school and want to simply smell clean all day, a linear cologne would be most appropriate. You won’t offend anyone by smelling clean and you don’t have to worry about the fragrance changing into something that the person next to you may not like.

Perhaps you’re heading out on the town to run some errands and you wish to go on a little adventure. Why not choose a cologne that changes as the hours pass? You’ll find yourself continuously sniffing yourself to complete the fragrance journey you started when you first sprayed the initial scent on your skin.

If you hear people talking about linear versus non-linear, pay attention, but don’t take their words as gospel. It’s your decision on whether you want a cologne that smells the same in it’s entirety or something that changes with time.

What the heck are notes?

A_Fragrance_Pyramid_Designed_by_CologneMasters

Every fragrance or cologne has base, middle, and top notes. If you combine all of these notes together, you get what is called an “accord”. When you spray a fragrance on your skin, the scent begins to evaporate over time. While the fragrance is evaporating, you will begin smelling different notes. Most colognes go through a progression from when you spray it on your body, until it fully evaporates or gets washed off. Top notes, which last only a few minutes, middle notes last less than a half hour, and base notes last until the fragrance fades away.

Top notes

These notes are also called the “head” notes. When the cologne is emitted from whatever is holding it, the top notes are identified immediately. The head notes consists of small, light molecules that evaporate quickly. These notes are the users first impression and for this reason are the most important when someone is selecting a cologne. The essence of these notes are very strong in how it smells, and evaporates quickly. Citrus and ginger are common top notes.

Middle Notes

Also called the “heart” notes, these notes show their true colors right after the initial blast of the top notes. The “head”notes quickly evaporate which set the stage for these middle notes to emerge from anywhere from two minutes up until a half hour or more. With some fragrances, the initial detonation of the cologne spray can be overpowering so the middle notes conceal the initial unpleasant spray of cologne straight out of the bottle. These middle notes grow more pleasant as time passes by. The heart notes are generally more mellow compared to the top notes.

Base

The base notes are the grand finale of the cologne’s journey of evaporation over time. These notes are not observed until approximately 30 minutes to an hour has passed by the initial application of the cologne. Since the base notes are the longest lasting, these molecules are described as strong, large, deep, and rich compounds.

The Fragrance Wheel

fragrance wheel

Phew! That was a lot of generic information on fragrance! But now, we are finally ready for the fun stuff and we are one step closer to choosing our first batch of cologne!

When you first start reading about different fragrances, it can be confusing trying to figure out how colognes smell just by reading about them. Better yet, if you head into a department store to check out some samples, your smelling ability starts to get overwhelmed after smelling just 3 colognes!

This is where the fragrance wheel comes into play and saves the day. Michael Edwards created an easy to understand wheel so you can gauge how a fragrance smells just by looking at where it falls on it.

In the four corners of the image you can see the main categories of floral, oriental, fresh and woody. Here is what these bad boys mean;

Floral – This is the most popular fragrance family. When you think of floral, you should obviously think of flowers. Floral notes can have the spirit of just one flower, which is called solifore, or it could contain the essences of many flowers which is called a white floral bouquet.

I know what you’re thinking and yes these fragrance are typical “girly” and “feminine”. However, with the right combinations of floral scents, these concoctions can smell very mature, prestigious, masculine, and beautiful.

Oriental – These are scents people remember and are great for holidays. These scents are rich, spicy, and usually include warm spices, resins, and rich opulent florals. Oriental flowers are exciting because they are often mysterious and seductive.

Oriental fragrances by themselves can be overpowering. This is why they are often mixed with floral notes to keep the fragrance from blowing everyone away.

Fresh – These scents should remind you of hopping out of the shower and smelling clean, crisp, zingy, and vivacious. The top men’s colognes right now seem to be all in this family of fragrances and you can find an array of the top fresh scents here.

These colognes are youthful colognes, but don’t think they are exclusively for kids. They are worn dominantly during the day and usually during the summer and spring months. Without ever smelling a fresh cologne, you can imagine what these scents smell like. Thinking about what it feels like when someone just steps out of the shower. A combination of this category with others are often deadly powerful combinations and super popular.

Woody – Last but not least we have our woody fragrances. The scents are considered earthy and should remind you of trees. At first this doesn’t sound too appealing but picture the warmth and smell of a roaring bonfire can bring.

Even though you don’t directly think of this warmth, you subconsciously feel it every time you put it on. These scents make you feel powerful and they are the type of fragrances you want to have your back as you go to a job interview, head to the office, or entertain friends at the cabin.

Notice for this article, we did not go into the sub-categories. If you are the type of guy that is just looking for his first cologne, a signature scent, or just something a little different, you do not need to know the sub-categories. Try to figure out the “main” categories first and figure out what types of cologne you like.

If you start to feel a little more attached to cologne and you find a particular family you just can’t get enough, that’s the time to really start focusing in on the sub-categories. We will not tackle these in this “Getting Started” post but in our next lesson we will go into them with more detail.

Tips and Tricks To Get You Started

Tips And Tricks To Get You Started

When it comes to selecting a cologne, you need to make the decision yourself. A “Cologne Master” can give you all the advice in the world, but it’s up to you to make the final decision on what cologne will work best with your body chemistry.

Have at least 3-4 colognes to get you started. When you choose what clothes our outfit you’re wearing for the day, cologne should be a primary accessory. If you’re heading to work, have a cologne for your business clothes and attire that goes a long with it. If you’re heading to the gym, make sure you have a cologne that works well for that. It’s always nice having cologne choices and you will need a few different ones for different occasions.

Women love cologne. If there is not other reason to wear it, this alone is worth it.

Don’t be that guy that puts on too much cologne. Everyone secretly laughs at you and you start receiving attention in a negative way. Remember the personal bubbles in grade school that the teacher didn’t allow you to enter into? If someone outside your personal bubble can smell you, definitely reduce the amount of cologne you are wearing.

Where To Begin Choosing Cologne?

Start thinking about why YOU want to wear cologne. Buying a fragrance to impress a lady is different than finding a cologne to wear to work or school. I strongly suggest taking a minute to think where you plan on wearing your colognes and each situation that you may want a different one. Like I mentioned before, I recommend having 3-4 different fragrances at a time.

1. For daily use like work/school… something clean/fresh

2. A signature scent… Something that when people smell they know you’re around the corner. Lot’s of kids can picture their fathers wearing their “signature scent”

3. Pure Sexiness… You should have a fragrance you use when you’re looking to make some magic happen

4. Something seasonal/manly/ or just a wildcard… For this cologne you might have something special you wear for holidays or maybe something you wear when you’re trying to smell extra manly

How To Make Your Fragrance Really Last

Closing Thoughts

I think what people forget what the purpose of cologne really is. If you read the first part of the page, you know how well it amplifies how you already feel about yourself. If you’re spraying cologne on yourself to impress a girl, you won’t unless you’re actually willing to make the move to do it. If you’re using fragrance as a way to cover your body odor, you will also fail because people smell right through that and you’re most likely going to over spray anyway.

Instead, use fragrance as a tool to enhance what you’re looking for. If you’re heading in for a job interview and need to look sophisticated, use a cologne that will enhance that. If you’re stepping out of the shower after working out and just want to smell clean for the people next to you, wear something that complements that. Don’t lose focus on what fragrance can do for you, because if you use it wisely, you’re going to blow peoples minds with the presence you set.
